This past weekend, the Algerian giants officially announced the South African tactician as their new head coach. The Johannesburg native had departed Wydad Athletic Club towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but he will now remain in North Africa, having signed a deal with the nine-time Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions.
Earlier this month, as reports emerged of Mokwena’s discussions with El Mouloudia, it was believed that some within the club had reservations about how his spell with the Red Castle ended. However, according to WinWin, the decisive factor in his appointment was his extensive experience in the CAF Champions League.
That, combined with his domestic success in South Africa — where he led Mamelodi Sundowns to league titles — reportedly convinced the club’s executives that the 39-year-old was the right candidate to succeed Khaled Ben Yahia.
Mokwena is expected to arrive in Algiers with four members of his own technical team, as he prepares to lead MC Alger to a potential league title challenge and improve on their recent CAF Champions League quarter-final finish.

Adding intrigue to his appointment is the subplot of his ongoing rivalry with CR Belouizdad head coach Sead Ramovic, setting up a compelling narrative in the Algerian capital this coming season.
