By the end of Saturday’s action, all of the newly promoted sides in the English top flight had registered victories, with Burnley defeating Sunderland 2-0. Goals from Josh Cullen and Jaidon Anthony earned the Clarets their first three points of the campaign. However, they could have taken the lead as early as the 18th minute through their South African forward Foster.
During Burnley’s previous stint in the Premier League in 2023/24, only Jacob Bruun Larsen and Zeki Amdouni outscored the Johannesburg-born striker, with Foster netting five times to their six.
Against the Black Cats this past weekend, Foster thought he had opened his and his team’s account for the new season after charging past two defenders and firing into the net. But referee Michael Salisbury had already blown for a foul, ruling that the striker had impeded Jenson Seelt in the build-up.

Clarifying the decision, the Premier League Centre account on X (formerly Twitter) – an official hub that provides updates from the Video Assistant Referee and PGMOL experts – stated:
“The referee’s call of no goal following a foul by Foster on Seelt was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Seelt was clearly tripped from behind.”
