Orlando Pirates have been handed a major boost with news that Relebohile Mofokeng’s injury is not as serious as initially feared, with the winger expected to return to action sooner rather than later.
The 20-year-old attacker was a surprise absentee in the Buccaneers’ narrow 1-0 league victory over Orbit College earlier this week, sparking concern after he had been ever-present in Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side this season.
Initial fears were that the youngster might face a spell on the sidelines, but the latest indications suggest that the setback was only precautionary.
Club insiders have indicated that medical checks cleared up concerns, with Mofokeng already on course to make a swift return to the matchday squad.
Ouaddou, without going into specifics during the post-match press conference on Tuesday, suggested that the winger’s recovery is progressing well and that his absence would not be a long-term issue.
The news comes as a relief not only for Pirates, who are building momentum in both domestic and cup competitions, but also for Bafana Bafana.
Mofokeng has been included in Hugo Broos’ squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and he is now expected to be available for both fixtures.
South Africa will play against Lesotho on September 5 before facing Nigeria on September 9, with both games scheduled for the Free State Stadium.
Mofokeng’s influence has been evident in Pirates’ revival after a slow start to the season. His direct running, creativity, and ability to unlock defences have made him one of the first names on Ouaddou’s team sheet, while his growing reputation has also attracted overseas interest.
With the injury scare now eased, Pirates fans can look forward to seeing their fan favourite back in Black and White soon, while the national team will be equally eager to call on his services in two crucial qualifiers.
