A familiar face is back in the Ugandan national team after Denis Onyango was recalled to the squad after a four-year absence.

Onyango was announced in the latest 2026 FIFA World Cup squad to play Mozambique and Somalia in two crucial games. Uganda sit fourth in group G with nine points, level with third-placed Botswana and three points behind second-placed Mozambique.
Two wins will place Uganda in a strong position to challenge Mozambique for the second-place spot and hopefully secure a place as one of the four runners-up to compete for a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs.
According to Nile Post, Onyango was instrumental in leading the Cranes to the 2017 and 2019 AFCON tournaments, and he adds valuable experience to the squad.
He made the last of his 82 national team caps in 2021 when he failed to help Uganda qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His retirement came with a shred of controversy as the Masandawana shotstopper wrote a letter to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President Moses Magogo.
It came at a time when leaked audio clips revealed the 40-year-old had complained that players' salaries were reportedly misappropriated by top officials.
