After Stanley Nwabali was stretchered off the pitch earlier this week, Nigeria have been dealt yet another setback ahead of their crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper was stretchered off in the 35th minute of Chippa United's 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership. While the extent of his injury is still unclear, the Chilli Boys skipper is expected to miss upcoming World Cup qualifier action – a development that could significantly compromise the Super Eagles’ preparations.
Adding to the concerns, striker Akor Adams has also emerged as a doubt. The 25-year-old forward joined Sevilla midway through the 2024/25 campaign but endured a difficult start in Spain, missing 13 games due to hamstring and muscle injuries, according to Transfermarkt.
Adams had finally established himself as Sevilla’s leading man upfront this season, completing 90 minutes in both of the club’s opening two league fixtures. He looked poised for a first call-up to Nigeria’s squad as well, but those plans have now been derailed.
Sevilla confirmed in an official statement that Adams has picked up another setback:
“Sevilla FC completed their first training session on Wednesday in preparation for this weekend’s match in Girona. After the post-match recovery session against Getafe CF, Matías Almeyda’s players trained at the sports complex with their sights set on securing all three points at Montilivi,” the club announced, as per Punch Nigeria.

“Neither Ruben Vargas nor Akor Adams were on the field with the group. The Swiss player carried out specific work in the gym, while the Nigerian is suffering from a long abductor injury in his left thigh and will miss the match against Girona.”
