Sundowns Face Hurdle In Esquivel Exit?

With Mamelodi Sundowns trimming their squad ahead of the new season, news reaching the Siya crew is that more departures are expected as part of the club’s ongoing restructuring efforts.

Sources have revealed that one of the players set for an exit, is South American midfielder Matias Esquivel, as previously reported by the Siya crew.

However, the delay in his release is understood to be due to complex financial logistics surrounding his contract. 

"He is one of the players who is supposed to be released by the club but its believed that there are financial complications and logistics involved with him compared to the other players and that's its taking a bit long. But his release is as good as done pending the agreement on those financial logistics," a source told the Siya crew.  

Indications are that the length of Esquivel’s contract has made the situation more challenging.

"He joined the club in 2023, and the club is trying to figure out if it will be better to loan him if they are to avoid paying a big amount out to release him. That's what they are working on," the source further revealed. 

Since his arrival, Esquivel has struggled to cement a spot in the team and featured in only 10 Betway Premiership League matches, scoring a single goal. He also spent the first half of last season on loan at his former club, Talleres Córdoba in Argentina.  

Soccer Laduma reached out to Sundowns for comment but attempts were unsuccessful.
