The Anglo-Scotsman took over as Boavista boss in April this year and was tasked with overseeing the Portuguese side's last five league games.
Wins against 17th-placed AVS and 16th-placed Farense gave Baxter's troops hopes of making the relegation play-offs but costly defeats against league champions Sporting CP, FC Porto, and Arouca confirmed Boavista's relegation.
Portuguese publication Abola reported that the side has already started preparations for next season to ensure the team makes a timeous return to the Primeira Liga.
However, the report states that Baxter's future at the club is dependent on several factors as reports suggest the former Kaizer Chiefs boss would remain with the side next season.

Boavista would be open to Baxter continuing as head coach but a new sporting project would need to be discussed and negotiated between the club and manager ahead of next season as many players will also be without contracts.
