The Anglo-Scottish manager has more than 35 years of management experience under his belt and his expertise will be needed to keep the side in the Liga Primeira.

Baxter previously worked in Portugal with Vitória Setubal in 1987.

The club announced on its website that Baxter had signed a new contract to remain in charge until the end of the 2025/26 season.

"Boavista FC Futebol SAD informs that it has reached an agreement with Stuart Baxter to take on the role of head coach of the senior football team," the club said.

With just five games left of the league campaign, Boavista are currently bottom of the 18-team league and their final fixtures include two must-win games against 17th-placed Farense and 16th-placed AVS.

Swedish publication Sport Bladet reported that the three-time Nedbank Cup winner was ready to take on the challenge at Boavista.

"If we can survive, I want to keep going and be part of building something new," the 71-year-old said. "In terms of history, the stadium, the fans, the Boavista institution, this is really exciting," he added.

Baxter admitted that things would not change immediately.

"It's about focusing on a few tactical, important details," the former SuperSport manager said.

"To lift the group mentally where the pressure should be on me as a coach, not on the players. I have won titles on two different continents and believe I can handle most different groups," Baxter added.
