The 38-year-old signed a two-year deal with The Mouloudia and he joins the Algerian outfit at a good time after they won the Ligue 1 Professionelle in back-to-back seasons.
Mokwena replaces Khaled Ben Yahia, and the former Wydad AC boss will hope he can replicate the success The People's Club experienced under the tutelage of the Tunisian coach.
After success with Mamelodi Sundowns and struggles with Wydad, Mokwena now has a fresh start as MC Alger boss and during an interview with Andile Ncube on Metro FM, Mokwena opened up on his decision to join the club.
"Firstly, it meets a lot of my personal objectives from a career perspectives," Mokwena said. "After Wydad, we sat with my agent and we analysed my mistakes, his mistakes and the club's mistakes," he added.
Mokwena said the MC Alger project had met a lot of his goals that he hoped to achieve as a manager.
"[CAF] Champions League, a team with some of the best players, a team competing at an aggressive level at a domestic level, the fans, the president and the people I've spoken to appear to be good people," Mokwena said.
The former White Castle boss also spoken openly about the challenges of managing in Morocco.
"If you move from Sundowns to Wydad, which is tougher than Sundowns, and is a different challenge, you are expecting to grow and be challenged by something even more difficult than the Wydad challenge, and there is not a lot out there," he said.

"At the end, I said to the people close to me 'I'm not going to take a sabbatical' because when the offer came, I was close to saying I'll take time off and travel a little bit and they were laughing because I said 'I'll actually have more fun in Algeria, even if it only lasts six months than I would sitting at home'," he added.
