Aliou Cissé is widely regarded as one of the most successful African-born coaches in recent years. The former midfielder made history by guiding his native Senegal to back-to-back FIFA World Cup appearances in 2018 and 2022 — a first for the West African nation. He also delivered their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022, cementing his legacy as a national icon.
However, Senegal’s disappointing Round of 16 exit at the 2024 AFCON seemingly intensified pressure on the 48-year-old, and eight months later, in September, the Senegalese Football Federation relieved him of his duties.
Cissé didn't stay unemployed for long, taking over the Libyan national team earlier this year. Upon his appointment, he was reportedly set to become the second-highest paid coach on the continent, earning a salary of €76 000 (R1.5 million) per month.
But according to Afrik-Foot, the former Lions of Teranga boss has yet to receive a single cent from the Libyan Football Federation, and is growing increasingly frustrated with the situation.
The report claims Cisse has now issued an ultimatum, threatening to walk away from the job if he is not paid by 17 July 2025.

Should he follow through on that threat, it would be a major blow for the Mediterranean Knights, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers fast approaching.
