The 21-year-old signed for the Union in 2023 and has become a mainstay in the team's defence. The side, managed by former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell, is currently top of the MLS Eastern Conference after 23 games played.
Philadelphia beat CF Montreal 2-1 on Thursday morning to extend their lead at the top of the table, and it was Makhanya's powerful header midway through the second half that proved to be the winning goal in what was his first for the club.
Speaking in a post-game interview, 'Big Mak' as he is affectionately known by fans, revealed his delight to score his first goal and help the side claim victory.
"I mean, obviously, I'm very happy to score my first goal for the team," Makhanya said.
"I feel like it was a very important one because we conceded a goal in the last minutes of the first half. When I went inside, I was looking at the goal and felt like I let the team down. So when I saw the corner kick opportunity, I was like 'you know what? This is my time to repay the team back'," the defender added.
