The reigning Premier League champions made headlines by signing Florian Wirtz for a record €125 million (R2.5 billion) — the highest transfer fee in both the club’s history and the Premier League. However, just weeks after securing the German star, the Reds are believed to be targeting an even bigger move.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have identified Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak as their number one attacking target. The Swedish international has flourished since arriving at St. James’ Park, becoming the Magpies’ main man in front of goal. The Solna-born forward has registered an impressive 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances for the club.
Romano reports that Liverpool have officially expressed their interest to Newcastle and are willing to break their own transfer record to bring Isak to Anfield. However, the deal is said to hinge on Newcastle’s own pursuit of Hugo Ekitike. The Magpies have reportedly submitted a €70 million (R1.4 billion) bid to Eintracht Frankfurt for the French striker, with hopes of pairing him with Isak.
Should Newcastle succeed in landing Ekitike, Liverpool will move forward with their efforts to sign the Swede. However, if Newcastle are unwilling to sell or fail to reach an agreement for the Frenchman, the Merseyside giants may attempt to sign Ekitike themselves.
