Despite rumours of South African interest in Thibang Phete, the Siya Crew understands that no Betway Premiership side has formalised an approach for the player, who now looks set to remain in Europe.

The defensive midfielder is among the most well-travelled South African footballers in recent memory.
After leaving Milano United in 2014, the Kimberley-born star has spent the bulk of his professional career in Portugal over the past decade, representing GD Tourizense, Vitoria Guimaraes, Famalicao, and B-SAD.
Phete also enjoyed a brief spell in the United Arab Emirates with Al-Bataeh CSC during the 2022/23 season before returning to Portugal with GD Chaves. Most recently, he joined Icelandic outfit Vestri Isafjordur, where he currently plies his trade.
This transfer window appeared as though it could finally be the one in which he returned to his homeland to feature in the Betway Premiership for the first time in his career. Early in the window, the Siya Crew was informed that a move away from Scandinavia was being explored, with reports later linking him to clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United.
However, the Siya crew has since been told by sources close to the player that no South African club has yet made a formal approach for his services.

Over the weekend, Phete started and played 73 minutes in Vestri’s 1-0 victory in the Mjolkurbikarinn (Icelandic Cup) final. With his contract running until December 2025, the four-cap Bafana Bafana international looks set to remain with the club for the foreseeable future and perhaps it is only once his deal expires, where South African sides will look to sign him mid-season.
That said, with time still left in the current transfer window, a surprise late move from South Africa or anywhere else in the world cannot be completely ruled out.
