Relebohile Mofokeng’s potential switch to Maccabi Haifa has encountered a serious off-field hurdle, with the ongoing war between Israel and Iran casting a shadow over the deal.
The Orlando Pirates starlet, one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, is reportedly at the top of Maccabi Haifa’s wish list ahead of the new season.

The Israeli giants have already begun talks with the 19-year-old’s camp and are believed to have tabled a €1.5 million (approx. R32 million) offer, matching the fee they paid last year for Xander Sabrina.
However, reports from Israel indicate that Mofokeng and his family have expressed concerns over the country’s volatile security situation, particularly following recent shooting incidents in Haifa, where the club is based. Tensions in the region have escalated following Iran’s ongoing conflict with Israel, raising valid safety fears for any foreign player considering a move there.

Despite the uncertainty, Maccabi Haifa remain optimistic. Club officials have reportedly reassured Mofokeng and his family during a recent meeting, emphasising that the move could be a major step forward in the young winger’s career.
The club believes Mofokeng could be a perfect fit for their system, especially following the collapse of their deal for Hamoudi Canaan, which has opened up space in the attacking unit behind the striker.
While Maccabi Tel Aviv are also rumoured to be monitoring the situation, Haifa are pushing hard to finalise the deal before they head to Hungary for their pre-season camp.
If successful, Mofokeng would join a club with a history of South African talent, following in the footsteps of Tsepo Masilela and Thembinkosi Fanteni.
The foreign reports are contrary to what Pirates insiders told the Siya crew, that the club is not talking to Israeli clubs about Mofokeng.
The Bafana star has been tipped to move abroad before the PSL season starts, but it remains to be seen if he can find the right club to take the next step in his career. Otherwise, PSL fans would be happy to continue enjoy watching him in the Premiership.
