Why Pirates Chose Ouaddou To Lead Their Next Chapter

Newly appointed Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates’ decision to appoint Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach is being described as a strategic and calculated move – not a stopgap solution.

The Soweto giants were deliberate in their search for a successor to Jose Riveiro, and believe they have found the ideal fit in the former Moroccan international.

Ouaddou had attracted interest from major African clubs, including Sudanese giants Al Hilal and a top side in Tanzania.

But according to sources close to the coach, his heart was set on the Betway Premiership, and he didn’t hesitate when the Pirates opportunity arose.

“The coach has always wanted to coach in the Betway Premiership and that’s why he gave the league priority,” said a source familiar with his camp.

“He wants a structured environment where his focus is on football, and that’s what Pirates offer.”

His recent work with Marumo Gallants, rescuing them from relegation and guiding them to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, solidified his credentials.

His Gallants side notably beat Pirates 2-0 in his first league game, a result that caught the attention of decision-makers at Houghton.

A second source confirmed that Pirates’ decision was based on more than results.

“It’s not by chance that Pirates appointed him. He’s played at the highest level and is regarded as one of the sharp minds in modern football. It was a well thought-out decision.”

Ouaddou brings with him international pedigree, having played in top European leagues and coached clubs on the continent, including AS Vita in DR Congo.

At Pirates, he will step into a stable environment with an experienced support staff and an ambitious pre-season tour in Spain lined up.
