There is hope, therefore, from the Brazilians' supporters, that 'Ka bo Yellow' can get out of the group that also has Borussia Dortmund and Flamengo.
Miguel Cardoso's charges, also topped their section after Dortmund were held to a goalless draw by the Brazilian side.
Soccer Laduma caught up with former Upington City, AmaZulu and Moroka Swallows coach Brandon Truter on his impression about the performance of Sundowns in their opener.
"Good performance, I think they gave a good account of South African football and gave a good account of themselves as well," Truter said.
"But the big test will be against Dortmund, where we can really see what our level is. No disrespect to Ulsan but it's not really high-level football.
"We saw it between Bayern (Munich) and Auckland City, Auckland City won numerous titles in their country, in their zone and when they came up against the big boys they got hammered 10-0," Truter went on.
"Sundowns were very impressive but the test will be against Dortmund and Flamengo."
The former Sekhukhune United mentor also revealed which players impressed him in Masandawana's win over Ulsan.
"Rayners on that stage looked very good, it brings joy seeing 'Mshishi' (Themba Zwane) back. I love to watch him play," Truter continued.

"(Lucas) Ribeiro gave a good account of himself as well. (Keanu) Cupido had a very outstanding debut, coming out of nowhere, into the line-up and giving a good account of himself.
"And of course our number one goalkeeper Ronwen (Williams). He was very good with the ball. He made the world see why he was nominated for Ballon d'Or," the former Richards Bay coach added.
Sundowns will be up against Dortmund on Saturday evening in Cincinnati from 6pm, SA time.
