Matlou: Chiefs Competing For Top 8 Instead Of The League

Matlou: Chiefs Competing For Top 8 Instead Of The League

Three straight Soweto Derby defeats have not given Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou reason to believe that there is anything wrong at Naturena, as he stressed the importance of focusing on this weekend’s encounter against rivals Orlando Pirates.

Amakhosi succumbed to a third straight Premiership defeat to the Buccaneers earlier this year, when Bucs’ Patrick Maswanganyi scored arguably the cheekiest goal from the penalty spot in Soweto Derby history.

Clearly not one to dwell on the past, Matlou expressed his desire to focus on what’s coming this weekend, as Amakhosi look to end the season with a run of good results, starting with the derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

“Nothing has gone wrong. It’s just a matter of results. We are confident and positive, coming for the maximum points on Saturday. I am not going to talk about the previous games. My only focus is the Soweto Derby coming on Saturday,” the former Swallows FC player told media during a Soweto Derby press conference in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

Currently ninth on the Betway Premiership standings, Amakhosi are at risk of missing out on the top eight. This would be a new low for the club, as it would make it the first time they do not qualify for the MTN8 in back-to-back campaigns. This means that the remaining matches of the campaign are of higher consequence.

“It’s very important for us, because last season we didn’t make it into the top eight. This season, we are struggling to get there, but we are working very hard to get into the top eight. Chiefs are one of the big clubs that has to be competing for the league. Unfortunately, we are competing for the top eight. It’s very important for us to get into the top eight and to start winning games.”

Matlou’s contract is due to expire at the end of June, but he did not want to get into the matter.

“I am a Chiefs player. I love the club. They love me too.”
