Twist: Chiefs' Rivals Enter Race For Velebayi & Baartman

Twist: Chiefs' Rivals Enter Race For Velebayi & Baartman

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - APRIL 22: Asanele Velebayi (Captain) of Cape Town Spurs during the Motsepe Foundation Championship match between Cape Town Spurs and Pretoria Callies FC

Kaizer Chiefs were struggling to get the signings of Cape Town Spurs players Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman over the line in a dispute over the legality of the potential transfer, and now there may be a new twist in the situation.

Spurs were initially stating that the two players are still contracted to them despite the team being relegated to the ABC Motsepe league from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Amakhosi could potentially sign the two players by paying a development compensation fee, which is believed to be around R1.5 million per player. Though, a ruling was yet to be made whether Chiefs could sign the players or not.

Now, there is a twist in the whole scenario as it's believed that a rival club of Chiefs is monitoring the situation with interest.

Insiders close to one of the top clubs in the PSL have indicated that they have enquired about both Velebayi and Baartman in case Chiefs end up not signing them.

"At the moment, it's an interest and an enquiry. They are looking at the possibility of how they can sign one of the two players if they can't settle for both of them. But it's believed that they are interested in both of them as things stand," the source close to the interested club told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile, a second insider stated that the interested club will only be able to sign these two Cape Town Spurs players if they finalise the list of players they are themselves releasing.

"There are a few more players who could leave before the close of the transfer window period, and then they can attempt to sign the two players from Cape Town Spurs. But it's believed that the interest is there and they have enquired about them," the second insider revealed.

Soccer Laduma contacted Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou who confirmed that there is interest, not only from Chiefs' rivals but other clubs as well.

"We have been alerted to such interest amongst many others. However, due to the ongoing cases, we cannot make any further comments," Efstathiou told Soccer Laduma.
