Joshua Taylor, a 16, year, old central midfielder from Cape Town City, walked away from the 2024 Engen Knockout Challenge as the tournament’s Midfielder of the Tournament, underlining his growing reputation as one of the country’s most exciting young conductors in the middle of the park.
Nicknamed “Josh” by his teammates, the Bishop Lavis, born talent impressed scouts with his technical mastery, spatial awareness and bravery under pressure.
Described as a “conductor” who makes things tick, Taylor is already being compared to Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane for his ability to control the rhythm of a game and pick the right moments to unlock defences.
“He’s brave, doesn’t shy away from pressure and understands his role so well,” said tournament scout Gareth Ngaca.
“He reminds me of a former City midfielder, Xhosa Manyama, who’s now in the USA, and funny enough, that’s Josh’s favourite player too.”
The right, footed midfielder is a product of CMES Football Academy, where he refined his ability to think quickly in tight spaces. His confidence and vision were on full display during the tournament, where he consistently dictated play and provided solutions in both defence and build,up phases.
Taylor's success is another shining example of the Engen Knockout Challenge as a key platform in South African football.
For many, it’s the first step towards a professional career, and for Taylor, the future looks bright!
