After being strongly linked with local giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in recent times, Thabang Matuludi could find himself with an even bigger opportunity in the months ahead, depending on his progress following a spell on the sidelines.
The 26-year-old Polokwane City defender has been making steady strides in his recovery after an injury prematurely ended what had been a standout campaign.

Matuludi had been a mainstay in the Rise and Shine backline, missing just a single league match during the 2023/24 season – a level of consistency that earned him a call-up to the South African COSAFA Cup squad under Helman Mkhalele last June. Then last season he played more than half of the fixtures before his long-term injury.
According to information received by Soccer Laduma, the Limpopo-based club has remained open to parting ways with the player, particularly if the right offer from abroad materialises.
“He has recovered from injury,” said a source close to the situation. “The club has always been keen on selling him, but the main priority has been to secure a move abroad. The injury hampered his progress and jeopardised a possible deal. But he is working hard, and a move abroad can’t be ruled out if he regains fitness and does well again, whether in Egypt or any of the top sides on the continent,” added the source.
Notably, Matuludi has previously been on the radar of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro during his time in charge of the Buccaneers.

With Riveiro now at the helm of African powerhouse Al Ahly, the possibility of an international switch remains an intriguing prospect if the defender picks up where he left off.
While Matuludi is expected to remain with Polokwane City at the start of the upcoming campaign, insiders indicate that continued good form could quickly put him back in the shop window, not just for the Soweto giants, but also for leading clubs elsewhere in Africa.
