The 23-year-old, who was one of the standout performers in Chiefs’ backline last season, has joined the team for their pre-season tour of the Netherlands and has resumed light training under close supervision.
Dortley suffered a serious knee injury nearly four months ago after a challenge from the side that left him requiring surgery. While the tackle went unpunished on the pitch, it brought a halt to what had been a breakout season for the Cape Town-born centre-back, who had even drawn the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
After undergoing successful surgery, Dortley began the long road to recovery, initially focusing on rebuilding strength by simply walking. As his condition improved, he progressed to treadmill exercises and short runs, gradually increasing his workload.
"This is my first serious injury that needed an operation," Dortley said during training in Apeldoorn, where the Amakhosi squad is based. "One has to be strong mentally, as you want to play, but you can't. It's not easy, but I do know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Chiefs physiotherapist Phumzile Ngobese, who has been closely monitoring Dortley’s progress, echoed the player's resilience and commitment. "It's tough for a player not to be part of the team operation. However, Rushwin is working tremendously hard, continuously pushing himself."
