The White Castle appointed the Belgian coach earlier this month to succeed Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro. The Egyptian side were linked with a move for South African duo Rulani Mokwena and Mosimane but ultimately moved for Ferrera.
Speaking following his appointment with the White Knight, Ferrera's agent Khaled Suleiman has revealed that Zamalek's eternal rivals, Al Ahly, were close to appointing the Belgian back in 2022, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
"Did Al Ahly negotiate with Ferrera? Yes, they did," Suleiman said. "Talks happened two or three years ago, to be exact."
He added: "This was right after Pitso Mosimane’s departure, but some negotiation details couldn’t be agreed upon, and Ferrera was under contract with another club at that time."

The 44-year-old instead took over at Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus before moves to Al-Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and RWDM Brussels before finalising his move to Zamalek.
