This past weekend, after only three months in charge, the Vigo native was dismissed from his role as Ahly head coach. In seven matches, the Spaniard managed just one victory, alongside four draws and two defeats.
It was the second of those losses, however, that ultimately sealed his fate. Reigning African champions Pyramids FC defeated the Red Devils 2-0 on Saturday evening, and by Sunday the record CAF Champions League winners had released a statement confirming the former Orlando Pirates boss’s sacking.
The Egyptian giants are now on the lookout for a new manager and are believed to be assessing several foreign candidates. One of the non-African names linked with the hot seat at Cairo International Stadium was that of Xavi Hernandez.
The former midfielder was last in the dugout with Barcelona at the end of the 2023/24 season. Having previously coached in the Middle East with Al Sadd, there was a belief that his experience in the region could make him a seamless fit for the Ahly role. However, Xavi’s agent has poured cold water on the speculation.
