Earlier this month, the Johannesburg native was announced as El Mouloudia’s new tactician following the departure of Khaled Ben Yahia. Not only is the 39-year-old now the youngest head coach in the Algerian top flight, but he also becomes the first South African to take charge of a club in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
On Monday, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates mentor was presented to the media for the first time in his new role. He admitted that he is determined not only to help the club retain the titles they have won in recent seasons, but also to push for success on the continental stage.
"I am very happy to be here. I joined a team that won the league title in the last two seasons, and this is very important... but the task now will be to defend these titles and strive to go further on the continental level,” Mokwena told members of the media, as per El Botola.
The 2023/24 South African league champion was in charge of Wydad Athletic Club last season and, despite not seeing out the campaign with the Moroccan giants, he claims the experience has helped him better understand the expectations of fans in North Africa heading into his new challenge in Algeria.
"It is natural to build a project step by step, but I know that time does not wait in North Africa, so we will work quickly to achieve our set goals. The fans expect results, victories, and good performance from us,” he added.
