Rise & Shine Mphahlele: Polokwane's Missing Piece

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 24: Ramahlwe Mphahlele, captain of AmaZulu FC during the Betway Premiership match between AmaZulu FC and Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium

Having secured top-eight finishes in the past two Betway Premiership seasons, Polokwane City are looking to strengthen their squad with experienced players who can help maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming campaign.

According to insiders close to the club with access to reliable information, Rise and Shine are believed to have identified former Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele as a primary target following his recent departure from AmaZulu FC.

The sources added that Polokwane City view the veteran defender as a potentially valuable addition who could bring leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.

"It's about looking at experience and leadership from him. He could help the team both as a player and as a person, as the team is working on building on the performances from the past two seasons. Rama could help them with that due to his experience," the insider told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile, a second source stated that while Mphahlele is a priority target, the Limpopo-based outfit is planning further reinforcements across multiple positions.

"It's not only Rama though. At the moment he could be the first target but the club is looking at continuing to build by signing other players as well in different positions, like strikers. They believe they need at least one more striker for the forthcoming season," the second source told the Siya crew.

The 35-year-old defender became a free agent after AmaZulu FC opted not to renew his contract at the end of last season. The well-traveled Mphahlele has enjoyed a distinguished career, representing clubs including Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns, and University of Pretoria before his spells with Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC.

Soccer Laduma contacted Polokwane City for comment on their interest in Mphahlele but received no response at the time of preparing this story.
