Aznou and Yamal were teammates at Barcelona's renowned La Masia Academy between 2021 and 2022 when they featured for the U16 side. The duo reportedly developed a good friendship during that time before going their separate ways.
Yamal established himself in the Barcelona first-team, while Aznou recently left Bayern Munich and signed for English Premier League side Everton for a fee of €9 million (R187 million).
According to Afrik Foot, Aznou revealed that he had spoken to Yamal regarding their national team allegiance. Both players were eligible to play for Spain and Morocco, as the new Everton star chose the Atlas Lions while Yamal chose La Roja.
"No, no, no, I didn't push him because I knew he was going to play for Spain," Aznou said. "So, like I said, it was his decision. I told him, 'You stay, I'm going. I'm going to follow my heart. Do what you want, but I respect your decision.'"
The 19-year-old revealed that if he were in the same position as Barcelona's number 10, he would have still chosen to play for Morocco.

"In his situation, I would have chosen Morocco," Everton's new signing said. "Yes, if I had been in his place, with my thoughts and ideas, I would have chosen Morocco," he concluded.
