Previous reports suggested the 18-year-old was set to take the famous number after it was confirmed that the shirt's previous incumbent, Ansu Fati, was to leave the club.
Yamal inherited the shirt that has been worn by great players before including Diego Maradona, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, and most famously, Lionel Messi.
The Argentine great wore the number from 2008 until his departure in 2021, and Yamal was widely considered to be the next big thing for the Blaugrana.
Yamal recently signed a new long-term contract until 2031 where he was officially unveiled as the Catalan club's new number 10.
The La Masia product revealed that he did not want to follow in Messi's footsteps, but create his own path, according to Bein Sports.
"Messi made his own way, and I’m going to make mine," he said. "I want to show who I am and carry this number with pride."
