With Rulani Mokwena recently being announced as the new MC Alger head coach, here’s a look at six former PSL tacticians who are currently plying their trade across the African continent.

The Johannesburg native was confirmed as the new boss of the nine-time Algerian champions this past weekend, beginning a fresh chapter in North Africa following his brief spell with Wydad Athletic Club. Unlike when he joined the Moroccan giants — who had just missed out on continental qualification — the 39-year-old now takes over a side that were crowned Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions.
Mokwena will face some familiar adversaries in Algeria in the form of Sead Ramović and Josef Zinnbauer. Ramović took charge of CR Belouizdad in early February, just weeks after his fellow German compatriot was appointed as head coach of JS Kabylie. With MC Alger, Kabylie, and Belouizdad finishing as the top three sides in the Algerian top flight last season — separated by just three points — another tightly contested title race is expected.
Elsewhere in North Africa, another former Betway Premiership coach has found a new home. Jose Riveiro left Orlando Pirates before the FIFA Club World Cup to take over at Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The Spanish coach’s departure from the Soweto club opened the door for another familiar name to rise.
Fadlu Davids, also formerly of Pirates, is now head coach of Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC. Last season marked the Capetonian’s debut campaign with the club, where he came close to winning both the Tanzanian Premier League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Davids, however, is not the only Cape Town-born tactician active in East Africa. Former striker Benni McCarthy is currently part of the Kenyan national team set-up, taking on an international role while his peers continue in club football.
