PSL Transfer Watch: Amankona Offered To Big Three

As the Betway Premiership season nears its conclusion, with only the clash between Orlando Pirates and Magesi FC remaining next Wednesday after this weekend’s fixtures, clubs are already turning their attention to potential reinforcements for the upcoming campaign.

One of the names gaining traction in Mzansi football circles is that of Stephen Amankona, the current leading goalscorer in the Ghana Premier League.

The 25-year-old attacker, whose contract expires in June 2025, has emerged as a hot commodity, having netted 13 goals after Week 31, putting him at the top of the goalscoring charts in Ghana.

His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, and his representatives have begun offering him to clubs in the PSL, including the country’s “Big Three” – Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amankona is known for his versatility in the final third, capable of operating on both the left and right wings, and has also played centrally when required.

His sharp finishing, pace, and attacking instincts have been key to his rise in Ghanaian football, and his current goal tally is a testament to his effectiveness in front of goal.

A source close to the player's camp confirmed that his profile has been submitted to several PSL clubs, saying: “Stephen’s contract is ending soon and this is a great opportunity for him to explore new challenges. He’s been introduced to a few clubs in South Africa and there’s been some interest. The big teams are being considered seriously.”

Should a move materialise, Amankona would follow in the footsteps of several Ghanaian players who’ve made the switch to the PSL in recent years, many of whom have adapted well and added value to their respective teams.

With clubs like Chiefs undergoing a rebuild, Pirates reinforcing their attacking options, and Sundowns constantly expanding their depth, Amankona presents a low-risk, high-reward prospect given his soon-to-expire contract and current form.
