Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg has been given the strong mandate to get the best Mzansi has to offer – at whatever cost!
According to impeccable Siya sources, the former Chelsea international scout and Danish FA talent manager has been given an open cheque book to crisscross South Africa and the world looking for homegrown players that can be the future of the reigning DStv Premiership champions.
Just this season alone, Berg was the overseer of yet another impressive transfer window for the Brazilians when he successfully negotiated the deal between Sundowns and Tshwane rivals SuperSport United.
Downs were able to get the Thapelo Maseko deal over the line for a figure believed to be in the region of R20 million despite the youngster attracting interest from Belgian topflight side KV Westerlo.
It's understood Berg has also instructed the club's network of scouts to continue to look for players in the same category, whether they are based in the Premier Soccer League or abroad. Soccer Laduma has been informed it doesn't appear as though money would be a hurdle.
What also puts the sporting director under pressure to perhaps consider only SA-born players is the high number of foreign stars the Chloorkop-based side have on their books when the PSL only permits five at any given time to be registered. Going the local talent route avoids the headache of offloading internationals.
