Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, the veteran goalkeeper confirmed that his mind was made up early in the campaign, and despite strong competition across the league, his choice has not changed.
“I already have my Player of the Season,” Khune told the Siya crew.
“I chose him very early, and even now, at the end of the campaign, he still has my vote. Lucas Ribeiro Costa.”
The Brazilian attacker has led from the front for Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, contributing consistently with goals and assists while showcasing his versatility and composure.
“He’s been the most consistent when it comes to goalscoring,” Khune explained. “But what I really like about him is that he is unselfish. He plays for the team, not just for himself.”
While other forwards like Iqraam Rayners and Peter Shalulile have also impressed this season, Khune believes Ribeiro Costa stands out for his balance between scoring and creating.
“People say strikers should be selfish in front of goal, but Ribeiro knows when to pass. He shares the glory with his teammates,” Khune said. “That is why at one point he and Rayners were tied on goals. I remember the Magesi game clearly, he scored two goals and went ahead. Even Shalulile has been brilliant, but Ribeiro gets my vote.”
Khune’s praise for a rival club’s player highlights the impact Ribeiro Costa has made during his debut season in South African football.
“For me, he’s been the most complete player this season,” Khune concluded. “My vote goes to Lucas Ribeiro Costa. Simple as that.”
