Insider: Spanish Coach On Pirates’ Radar

Former AmaZulu FC head coach Pablo Franco Martin has emerged as one of the potential candidates for the Orlando Pirates coaching job, following his recent departure from Saudi Arabian side Al-Faisaly.

The Spanish tactician, who had a brief spell in South Africa’s top flight during the 2023/24 season, parted ways with AmaZulu FC in September last year.

After his stint in Mzansi, he took charge of Al-Faisaly, a club competing in Saudi Arabia’s second-tier league.

However, he has since left the Middle Eastern outfit, reportedly turning down a contract renewal despite a salary increase being offered.

Now, Franco Martin could be on his way back to Mzansi, with sources indicating that Pirates have entered discussions with the experienced coach.

According to a source close to the matter, “There have been talks between Pablo Franco Martin and Orlando Pirates. An offer has been made but he is not the only coach the club is looking at and there are other candidates. He is very interested in the Pirates job, and he has since parted ways with the club he was coaching in Saudi Arabia despite being made an offer to increase his salary to renew his contract.”

The Buccaneers, known for their ambition and competitiveness both domestically and in continental competitions, are believed to be assessing several options as they look to strengthen their technical team ahead of the new season.

Franco Martin’s familiarity with South African football, coupled with his international experience, makes him an intriguing prospect for the Soweto giants.

While no official confirmation has been made by the club, the speculation surrounding Franco Martin’s possible return to the Betway Premiership adds another layer of intrigue to what is shaping up to be a busy off-season for the Buccaneers.
