Orlando Pirates defender Deano Van Rooyen recently shared that his transition from Stellenbosch FC in the Western Cape to his new club in Johannesburg was both difficult and emotional.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma ahead of their league match against his former team, Stellies on Sunday at Orlando Stadium, the right-back reflected on the significant changes he is experiencing.

Van Rooyen explained that despite the emotional challenges, the move was a step toward fulfilling his long-held dream.

"You know it's always difficult to leave your home and go to a new place. It was hard and emotional for me because all my life all I knew about was life in Cape Town but at the same time I had to follow my dream. I have always dreamt of playing for a big team like Pirates. I have supported Pirates since I was like 8 or 9 years old and this was a dream come true which I could not turn down. Though, as much as it was emotional, this is my work and a job opportunity came around and I had to take it," Van Rooyen told the Siya crew.

Moreover, Van Rooyen mentioned how the presence of his cousin, Kaizer Chiefs striker Ashley Du Preez, in Johannesburg influenced his decision to join Pirates.

"Yes, my cousin (Ashley Du Preez) told me that I can come to Joburg as there was nothing bad. He advised me to follow my dreams and join Pirates. The only problem now is we don't meet that much because we were rivals but we text each other more often to check on each other. But I had to sacrifice the other family as they are still in Cape Town. And also you know in Cape Town I used to be indoors and just go the mall to buy groceries but here things are so far apart and then there is the traffic on the roads. I think that's the main difference for now. But I am getting used to life in Gauteng now," Van Rooyen concluded.

Van Rooyen's transition to Bucs not only marks a significant career move but also underscores the personal sacrifices and dreams that professional athletes often navigate. His journey from Stellenbosch FC to one of South Africa's most prominent clubs highlights the allure and ambition that drive players to step out of their comfort zones in pursuit of their aspirations.

Even though Stellies have performed brilliantly in South African football over the past year, by joining Pirates, Van Rooyen is fulfilling a childhood dream and embracing the chance to showcase his talents on a larger stage, demonstrating his commitment to personal and professional growth.

As he settles into life in Johannesburg, Van Rooyen is adapting to the challenges and opportunities that come with playing for a top-tier team competing for the biggest honours at home and in Africa. The geographical and lifestyle changes exemplify the broader adjustments he faces, both on and off the field.

Despite these challenges, his close relationship with his cousin, Du Preez, provides a support system that helps navigate this new chapter. With his dedication and passion for the game, Van Rooyen is poised to make a significant impact at Pirates, contributing to their quest for success while continuing to hone his skills and achieve his personal objectives.
