Nedbank Cup Weekend In Images

Nedbank Cup Weekend In Images

Richards Bay players celebrate after VIlane scored the winner at FNB Stadium.

The Nedbank Cup weekend had all the drama, upsets and action to keep supporters on the edge of their seats.

The biggest shock of the weekend was by far the exit of Kaizer Chiefs at the hands of GladAfrica Championship side Richards Bay. The Natal Rich Boys registered a 2-1 victory over 10-man Amakhosi, joining the likes of TS Galaxy, Baroka FC, FC Cape Town and University of Pretoria as lower division clubs to knock the Soweto giants out of the competition. After the defeat, Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt described it as 'embarrassing', it being the first time he gets knocked out of the competition by a lower division club.

Chiefs were not the only top-flight club to get sent packing by a GladAfrica Championship side. TS Galaxy were beaten on penalties by TS Sporting, while Chippa United needed a shootout to overcome Free State Stars.

AmaZulu and Golden Arrows needed a penalty shootout for a winner to be decided and it was Benni McCarthy's Usuthu who came out tops on Saturday. Black Leopards needed a brace from Zimbabwean international Ovidy Karuru to progress to the next round, beating a stubborn Jomo Cosmos side 2-1. In-form Swallows FC progressed thanks to a 1-0 win over Cape Umoya United, while a Tashreeq Morris hat-trick inspired Cape Town City to a 4-0 win over struggling Bloemfontein Celtic.

On Friday, Maritzburg United edged Sekhukhune United 2-1, and Pretoria Callies registered a 1-0 win over Royal AM.

Sundowns, meanwhile, were not in action over the weekend after they beat Stellenbosch FC last Wednesday. A select few of Sundowns players and technical team members attended Motjeka Madisha's funeral.
