Nedbank Cup Report: Chippa United v Free State Stars

Result: Chippa United 2-2 Free State Stars (Chippa won 4-3 on penalties)

Date: 07 February 2021

Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Chippa United scraped through to the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 on penalties against GladAfrica Championship outfit Free State Stars at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

Chippa brought in Anthony Laffor, Kurt Lentjies, Nyiko Mobbie, Ryan Rae, Sizwe Mdlinzo and Bienvenu Eva Nga as they made six changes to their side from the 2-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the 16th minute, Chippa goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali had to make his first save and it was a routine one from Danny Venter's rather tame effort in the end.

Five minutes later, Anthony Laffor whipped a dangerous ball into the box but Andile Mbenyane just failed to get on the end of it by a matter of inches.

The Chilli Boys were doing all the playing, but the final ball in the last third was letting them down. The first corner of the half went to the hosts. Mokhele whipped it in but Lentjies shot narrowly wide.

After a scoreless first half, Mtshali was called into action 10 minutes into the second half after pulling off a one-handed save from a nice build up by Ea lla koto.

Soon after, Dan Malesela made a double substitution, bringing on Peter Maloisane for Laffor and Ayabulela Konqobe for Eva Nga.

Chippa left-back Riaan Hanamub popped up to score what looked like the winner in the 86th minute after excellent play by substitute Konqobe in the build-up, who made the desired impact off the bench.

But just two minutes later, Ea Lla Koto equalised in dramatic fashion as they capitalised on a defensive error from the Chilli Boys.

The GladAfrica championship side then shocked Malesela's men when they took the lead in the 105th from a build up on the left wing and easy tap in for the striker.

Mbenyane equalised for the DStv Premiership side in the 116th minute which took the game to penalties, where the Chilli Boys prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out to secure a spot in the second round.
