The Clever Boys should have broken the deadlock in the 11th minute but Bienvenu Eva Nga was unable to add his Nedbank Cup tally after heading wide of the target from six-yards out.

Unfortunately for Eva Nga, that was his final involvement in the encounter as the Cameroonian striker was forced off with an injury six minutes later and replaced Mxolisi Macuphu.

Eva Nga's did not disturb Wits' momentum, as they broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after Thulani Hlatshwayo's header deflected into the back of the net at the near post.

The lead was doubled two minutes later through Phathutshedzo Nange, who found the back of the net with an effort from distance that deceived Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa for his third goal of the season in all competitions.

The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, really struggled to conjure up any openings at the other end of the pitch as Nigerian striker Augustine Kwem was left frustrated with no service.

After a quiet opening to the second half, Norman Mapeza opted for a double change just before the hour mark as Ruzaigh Gamildien, who scored the previous round, and Mduduzi Sibeko were introduced for the visitors.

Despite the double change from Chippa, Wits continued to have joy going forward but they were unable to add their tally as Nange squandered a glorious chance by nodding wide from Deon Hotto's cross.

The remaining stages proved to be a relatively quiet affair as Gavin Hunt's men booked a spot in the last eight and got revenge after being eliminated by the Chilli Boys in last season's round of 16 tie.

The quarter-final draw is scheduled to take on Tuesday, 25 February at 19h30.

Here's how they lined up:

Wits: Petersen; Mkhwanazi, Hlatshwayo ©?, Gordinho, Phiri, Hotto, Monare, Nange, Pelembe, Dzvukamanja, Eva Nga.
