Mokwena On Ahly And Wydad Radar

Mokwena On Ahly And Wydad Radar

According to Siya sources in North Africa, two of the continents' biggest sides have put Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena on their radar.

It's come to the fore that during their recent visit to Egypt for the CAF Champions League group stage clash against Al Ahly, the young South African mentor is believed to have been courted by agents and officials.

Word is that both Ahly and Wydad Casablanca of Morocco used the Downs fixture to suss out whether Mokwena would be keen to jump ship.

The Siya crew has been led to believe that the two teams used different means, in separate instances, to target an informal conversation with Mokwena, who was made the sole head coach of Sundowns in October last year.

Indications are that an agent claiming to have been sent by Wydad went to the Sundowns hotel, but it is not clear how far he got in getting a response from Mokwena.

And then upon departure, eyewitnesses have suggested officials understood to have close ties with Ahly, also approached the coach about a possible switch.

Wydad did re-appoint Spanish mentor Juan Carlos Garrido a day after Downs held Ahly to a 2-2 draw in Cairo, so it remains to be seen if the interest will remain.

In September last year, Ahly hired Swiss coach Marcel Koller and gave him a contract that ends in June 2024 – which is when Mokwena's agreement with Downs also expires.

Should Mokwena remain in South Africa or take the step to coaching on the continent? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
