Chiefs Could Sign Just One Out Of Monyane & Mako

Chiefs Could Sign Just One Out Of Monyane & Mako

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - APRIL 13: Thabiso Monyane of Orlando Pirates during the Nedbank Cup, Semi Final match between Orlando Pirates and Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium

With reports linking two former Orlando Pirates defenders Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako to Kaizer Chiefs, new information suggests Amakhosi's interest may be on just one of the players.

A Naturena insider with knowledge of the club's transfer priorities has indicated that Amakhosi may not sign both players.

The insider added that the scouts, management and technical team are happy with Thabiso Monyane and that he is the one they are expected to bring in but there are doubts on what would happen with Paseka Mako.

"It's believed that the player that the club is really interested in is apparently Thabiso Monyane. They are saying they have been releasing players around the ages of 31 years to 34 years old, so then why should they sign a 31-year-old in Paseka Mako? You see Monyane is 25-years-old and has a long future ahead of him compared to Mako. That's why they are more interested in Monyane than Mako," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A confidant with intimate knowledge of Chiefs' positional needs further stated that the club is looking at strengthening the left-back position but the insider believes Mako is not necessarily the preferred candidate.

"It's not a secret the club wants to boost that left back position but Paseka Mako was not on the list of the players to be considered. Yes, we know in football a lot can happen but the club's priority lies with other players including the youngsters from the DDC like Kabelo Nkgwesa and Nkosana Mbuthu for now, and others as well that the team has been looking at," the second source believes.

Mako featured in many games for Bucs last season, but before that he was not a regular in the starting line-up.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment on the issue but there was no response at the time of publishing this story.

The clarification about Chiefs' targeted interest suggests a continued shift in their recruitment policy toward younger players with long-term potential. Though, exceptions have been made in the past year, such as with the signing of 34-year-old Gaston Sirino. While Monyane is the main target, it doesn't mean Chiefs can't sign Mako as well, and it remains to be seen if both might be signed after all.
