'Killer' Backs Chiefs' Decision Not To Sign Tau

'Killer' Backs Chiefs' Decision Not To Sign Tau

Recent insider revelations to the Siya crew suggested Kaizer Chiefs have cooled their interest in Percy Tau, despite the Bafana Bafana star becoming available as a free agent.

However, a former Chiefs striker believes the club should carefully consider the Lion of Judah's potential value, while warning of the historical challenges such a move might present.

Also a former Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Katlego "Killer" Mphela has offered his candid assessment on Tau, noting that the history of former Brazilians players joining Amakhosi has mostly not been successful.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Mphela said that there is a lot of pressure on those players to deliver because of the expectations after what they had achieved at Sundowns.

"In the past few seasons Chiefs have not been doing well despite winning a trophy last season and they need players who will help them change the team's fortunes. But I don't think signing Percy Tau will be the solution if you look at the history of most former Sundowns players who joined Chiefs including myself. We don't live up to expectations. There is a lot expectations and that puts pressure on the players. Look at what happened to Keagan Dolly, Khama Billiat or Edward Manqele. Yes, they are different players but expectations are the same and history is the same. It's a tricky one because Percy has a lot of quality and experience but the history will tell you the truth about former Sundowns players at Chiefs. It's not a good one," Mphela told Soccer Laduma.

The former Bafana Bafana striker further added that Chiefs need to sign more players than just Tau to help the team improve next season.

"They don't need to sign one player to change the team and for the team to perform well. On his own he won't help the team. So if they really need to sign him they have to look at players who can help him and the team achieve good results. But it would be more better if they sign more players instead of Percy Tau," Mphela told the Siya crew.

The caution expressed by Mphela reflects a broader pattern that Chiefs' management may have recognised, with the club reportedly shifting their recruitment strategy away from high-profile, high-salary signings following mixed results from previous marquee additions. Whether this represents a permanent change in transfer policy or simply a decision specific to Tau's situation remains to be seen as the transfer window progresses.

Amakhosi did sign Gaston Sirino last season, and he was instrumental in the club lifting the Nedbank Cup.
