Rulani Mokwena was on the brink of making a sensational return to the Betway Premiership with Richards Bay FC, but the move fell through at the final hurdle, and not for football reasons.

Following his surprise departure from Mamelodi Sundowns in July last year, Mokwena was approached by the Natal Rich Boyz, who had just landed a game-changing R100 million sponsorship from Phakwe Gas, led by the charismatic businessman Thabiso Tenyane. The club’s ambition was clear: secure a high-profile coach capable of transforming their fortunes, and Mokwena was their dream target.
Speaking in a candid interview with Marawa Sports Worldwide, Mokwena confirmed that negotiations had progressed significantly.
He even spent a weekend in Richards Bay, observing the club’s inner workings and drawing up a detailed technical report on what changes would be required if he were to take over.
However, the talks took a dramatic turn when club chairman Jomo Biyela publicly distanced the club from Mokwena, stating that there were no intentions to appoint him. The comments stunned the 38-year-old, who saw it as a breach of trust and a misrepresentation of the negotiations.
“It didn’t sit well with me,” Mokwena admitted. His disappointment ultimately led him to walk away from the opportunity, despite having done groundwork in preparation for the role.
Instead, Mokwena accepted an offer from Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, where he had left at the end of the season.
In the latest news, the Siya crew has linked Mokwena with the possibility of returning to Pirates.
