Kaizer Chiefs chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung has raised his concerns about the buying and selling of club statuses in the Premier Soccer League, suggesting that it may be contributing to the instability and disappearance of historically significant teams.

Dr Motaung was speaking after being conferred his second honorary doctorate, this time by Wits University's Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management.
Reflecting on the collapse of Bidvest Wits, he said;
"Well, what I can agree with you is that Wits was an asset to South African football. Because of the way they conducted themselves, the way they gave us that fight for us to achieve greater, and to go to greater heights, because they had a good team. They had a very good structure.
"And of course, the problem in our football might be the question of this thing of change of ownerships and stuff like that has become a problem. Maybe Wits will not have sold had they not had maybe financial challenges because they, you know, they probably had problems in terms of the revenue they get, because I don't think government would give them money for football, because there are other football clubs. These are lessons that we need to learn."
Dr Motaung’s remarks will resonate with many South African football fans still reeling from the loss of traditional clubs like Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic and more recently SuperSport United, who have disappeared through the sale of their top flight statuses.
