The story

Former Kaizer Chiefs holding midfielder, Willard Katsande, recently paid tribute to three of the toughest midfield players he came up against during his career.

The fearless Amakhosi legend and former Zimbabwean international played the bulk of his career in South Africa, having made his breakthrough in 2010 at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) before making his mark at Chiefs.

Katsande plied his trade at the Glamour Boys for a decade before making the switch to Sekhukhune United before retiring in 2022.

Famously known for his "Salt & Pepper" nickname and his crunching tackles, Katsande recently sat down with former Orlando Pirates skipper Happy Jele and Obakeng "OB Knows" Ngobeni on the latest episode of "iDiski Dine" to discuss his football journey in South Africa.

When asked by Magents on the toughest opponents he's ever faced, Katsande made mention of three African football legends.

"Locally [In SA], I would say whenever I marked Oupa Manyisa, he was a bit of a problem. Prime Manyisa was very good. And Teko [Modise], they know how to operate in the small space and drag you out of position," shared Katsande, paying tribute to Modise and Manyisa.

"In Africa, there was [Mohamed] Aboutrika, from Al Ahly. That's my main player. I marked him as a six. I wouldn't mention a defensive midfielder because you barely encounter each other on the pitch.

"But Aboutrika was a playmaker, a ten, he was unbelievable. If you want to know about him, go to his country or search for him on YouTube. He was a helluva great player," said Katsande on Pharaoh's icon and two-time AFCON winner, Aboutrika.
