The story
In a short clip posted by The New York Times' The Athletic, the likes of club captain Themba Zwane, Bafana Bafana stars Thapelo Morena, Teboho Mokoena and Grant Kekana all had their pick on the one world-class player they'd like to share a pitch with at the US-hosted tournament.
Morena, Kekana, and "Mshishi" all named France and Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe as the baller they'd love a clash with – while Mokoena named Spain and Manchester City's superstar midfielder, Rodri, as his number one choice.
Masandawana's South American contingent, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Marcelo Allende, named Inter Miami and Argentine great Lionel Messi as their dream opponent.
Why Messi? The choice was simple for Ribeiro Costa, who revealed that Messi is his football idol.
Mokoena picked the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, Rodri, as his choice simply for the fact that he bases his game around the Spaniard.
