The story
The music and football worlds are connected more than ever, and with Drake's recent Cole Palmer post, the beautiful game's pop cultural relevance is elevated by more than just fashion; musicians and ballers share plenty of admiration for each other in a lot of cases.
Around a week ago, Cole Palmer was widely believed to be the inspiration behind the rumoured title of Drake's upcoming album, Iceman.
Fueling the speculation, Drake recently shared an Instagram post featuring a montage of photos and videos, including a clip of Palmer responding to the question, "If you were to be a rapper, what name would you go with?" His answer: "Iceman."
The subtle nod has fans convinced the English star played a key role in naming the Canadian rapper's latest project.
The term "cold" — slang for impressive or elite — has often been linked to Palmer, thanks to his signature shivering goal celebration and his calm, composed style on the pitch, hence 'Iceman' being his dream rap name.
On local shores, the crossover between Mzansi's biggest musical talent and major football stars is seeing quite the progression of late.
This week alone, we've seen "Kunye" mastermind and household producer DJ Shimza linking up with Mohau Nkota in Spain, as well as Sjava and Emtee posting a snap of themselves alongside last season's Betway Premiership Midfielder of the Season, Makhlene Makhaula.
Music and football have quite the symbiotic relationship, as song and dance play a huge role in SA football culture (e.g. players signing Gwijo).
In the past, Thembinkosi Lorch's iconic goal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations against hosts Egypt is immortalised by Focalistic and Kabza De Small’s 2020 Amapiano hit, "Lorch."
Doctor Khumalo has a track with the late Bob Mabena, "Get Funky", and Benni McCarthy set the late 90s on fire with a memorable Afrikaans verse on TKZee's "Shibobo (Final Countdown)" and starred on AKA's "Jealousy" music video in 2013.
