'Al Ahly Gave The Best CWC Performance, Not Downs'

'Al Ahly Gave The Best CWC Performance, Not Downs'

A former Nigeria star has claimed that Al Ahly had a better FIFA Club World Cup than Mamelodi Sundowns.

A Nigerian legend has claimed that Al Ahly performed better than Mamelodi Sundowns at the FIFA Club World Cup, despite the South African side collecting the most points of all CAF representatives.

None of Africa’s four representatives at the newly expanded global showpiece—Al Ahly, Sundowns, Esperance de Tunis and Wydad Athletic Club—managed to reach the knockout stages, making CAF the only continental body without a team in the Round of 16.

Mamelodi Sundowns came the closest to progressing. The South African champions beat Ulsan HD 1-0 in their opener, before narrowly losing 4-3 to German giants Borussia Dortmund. Needing a win in their final group match against Fluminense, Sundowns were held to a goalless draw, resulting in their elimination.

Despite Ka Bo Yellow’s solid showing, former Nigeria international Tijani Babangida believes Al Ahly were the better-performing African side at the tournament.

“The African teams were below par, and I'm sad that none of them were able to go far in the competition," Babangida said on Al-Ahly TV.

“Al-Ahly, for example, played great matches, but they needed to focus more on achieving results. Perhaps they lacked some focus, and if that had been achieved, it would have been possible to qualify for the next round.

"Al-Ahly, just its name was enough. It gave the best performance among the African clubs participating in the Club World Cup, especially in the last match. Followed by Sundowns.”

Despite Babangida's praise, Al Ahly only managed to leave the tournament with two points after a 2-0 loss to Palmeiras was sandwiched between a goalless draw against Inter Miami and a thrilling 4-4 stalemate with FC Porto.
