A former Al Ahly star has claimed that it was necessary for the record African champions to fire Marcel Koller after their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.

This season, the Swiss tactician had the opportunity to achieve something historic by becoming the first-ever head coach to win three successive continental crowns.
He won his first at the expense of Wydad Athletic Club, and last season he defeated Miguel Cardoso’s Esperance de Tunis to achieve back-to-back continental triumphs.
However, this season, the Portuguese tactician got the better of his 64-year-old counterpart at the semi-final stage, as a 1-1 draw in Cairo was enough to see Masandawana reach the final at the expense of the Club of the Century.
That stalemate in the Egyptian capital would be Koller’s final match in charge of the North African champions, as Ahly dismissed him shortly after.
He was replaced by Emad El-Nahhas, who is in charge of the club on an interim basis, and since their continental elimination, Ahly have racked up six successive wins in the league to capture a 45th Egyptian Premier League title.
Former Al Ahly star Islam El-Shater believes that the dismissal of the Zurich native was necessary to win the league.
"This season's league title was special in every way, because the team came away from a loss to Sundowns due to clear mistakes. I can say this frankly, I was a staunch supporter of Kohler, but he made major mistakes in that match, so it was only natural for him to leave after that,” the three-time Champions League winner said, as per Btolat.
The former attacker has also thrown his weight behind Pyramids FC to get the better of Ka Bo Yellow in the second leg of the Champions League final, as they head back to Cairo with a 1-1 draw.
"I hope Pyramids win the CAF Champions League final against Sundowns. The match isn't over yet, there are still 90 minutes to go,” he added.

“I hope my message reaches the Pyramids players, as they represent Egypt in this tournament. No matter what is said or what happens, Pyramids is an Egyptian club, and I will support them in this match. I hope they win the CAF Champions League title and qualify for the Club World Cup."
