Top 50 World Cup Moments: Maradona Of The Arabs

Saeed Al-Owairan

With less than 50 days until the start of the World Cup in Brazil, Soccer Laduma takes a look back at out Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 37: Maradona Of The Arabs.

Saeed Al-Owairan received this nickname after scoring the goal of the tournament at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

The Saudi Arabia international scored the goal in the third group match against Belgium, which ensured that his country reached the round of last 16 for the only time in history.

It was his country's first ever World Cup appearance and Belgium had kept a clean sheet in the opening two games, but Al-Owairan sliced through their defence as if they were amateurs.

He picked up the ball in his own half and started to run. He beat two defenders and kept running, two more can't stop him. Then he enters the box surrounded by defenders and finds the right finish, gooooooaaaaaal!

People thought, only Diego Maradona could score such a goal, but they were wrong. Saeed Al-Owairan scored this amazing goal which was later voted the sixth best in FIFA's Goal of the Century rankings.
