Kylian Mbappe is set to miss the FIFA Club World Cup indefinitely following Real Madrid’s latest update regarding the player.
The French forward was absent from Los Blancos' opening match at the global spectacle, in which they were held to a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal at the Hard Rock Stadium. According to Spanish publication Diario AS, the 27-year-old missed the previous day's training session, citing a lack of physical strength to even engage in light activities.
It is understood that, rather than improving as the day progressed, Mbappe’s condition worsened despite the treatment provided by the club’s medical team. As a result, they decided against hospitalising him immediately.
An official statement from the record European champions read:
“Our player Kylian Mbappé is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been hospitalised for various examinations and to receive the appropriate treatment.”
Mbappe has been discharged from hospital on Thursday evening. His chances of featuring in Real Madrid’s next Club World Cup match against Mexican side Pachuca are said to be slim. At this stage, no definitive timeline has been set for his return, with medical staff closely monitoring his condition in the meantime.
According to the NHS website, gastroenteritis is a common mild stomach bug characterised by diarrhoea and vomiting, often related to food poisoning. It can last for a week.
