It has been reported that James Rodriguez is looking for a way out of the Santiago Bernabeu, and the club are said to be prepared to let him go if they can recoup most of the €75 million (R1.1 billion) they paid for him.
According to Spanish TV station El Chiringuito, the Blaugrana are now assessing Rodriguez's situation with a view to plotting a surprise deal, and it has been claimed that Messi, who is understood to be a huge fan of the attacking midfielder, has given the transfer his blessing.
The 25-year-old has started only 14 of his 24 games for Zinedine Zidane's side this season, scoring five times and assisting another 12 goals.
Overall, Rodriguez has scored 30 goals and set up another 40 strikes since joining Real after winning the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
