The 32-year-old won both the 2016 FIFA Best Men's award and the latest Ballon d'Or, after France Football and FIFA split up to hand out two annual awards for the best player in the world.

However, the Portuguese has struggled to reach his usual heights this season, and former FC Barcelona and Brazil striker Romario has claimed he is now well behind Messi and Neymar

"Neymar is the best player in the world nowadays – with all due respect to Messi and Cristiano," Romario said, as quoted by ESPN.

"Although I think Cristiano is significantly worse than the other two."

The 1994 FIFA World Cup champion also believes Neymar has what it takes to lead Brazil to a sixth World Cup title.

"For what he's been doing for both club and country, he's the best," Romario added.

"God willing, he's the one who can give us another World Cup in Russia."

Neymar has scored 15 goals and assisted another 24 strikes for Barca so far this season, and recently climbed into fourth spot in Brazil's all-time goalscorers list with 52 strikes – just three behind Romario.
